What an offshore survey planner should actually do

An offshore survey planner is not a generic GIS. It has to produce sail lines, a vessel path that can be run, and a duration you can defend in a client meeting.

Preplots first

Line spacing, azimuth, shot interval and bin grid have to be explicit. If the tool cannot generate and edit preplots, everything downstream is guesswork. Export to KML, Shapefile and GeoJSON is the hand-off to the vessel and to other GIS stacks.

Route search that respects the field

Turns, obstructions, exclusion zones and minimum radius are the difference between a pretty map and a plan. Deep-search optimisation is useful when line order is not obvious — typical for OBN and infill.

Time, tides and cost in one place

Look-ahead timing, standby and downtime belong next to the route, not in a separate spreadsheet. Tide windows change whether a line is even legal to acquire. Cost follows duration; it should not be a surprise at the end.

Marine GIS, not a wallpaper map

Charts, bathymetry, infrastructure, MPAs and live weather only help if they sit on the same plan you will export. Measurement and layer control are daily tools for client reps, not extras.
